What May Happen When Stumps Are Not Removed

Trees have to be taken down for a number of reasons. When that happens, tree stumps are often left behind, untouched. It may not seem like stumps are dangerous to have around, but they could be. With our experience working on many properties in Mobile, we can tell you that there are a number of potential scenarios that could arise when those stumps are not removed.

Pests and/or Fungi

In our region, there are always insects and organisms that are looking for a place to call home. The good news for them is that tree stumps can be a perfect place to colonize. That’s bad news for people, though.

When carpenter ants or termites, for example, move into an old stump, they can quickly grow in number. Soon, they may start to look for other places to invade, and your home could be their next target. Fungi could also grow on old stumps. Besides being unsightly, fungi can be dangerous for pets and small children to touch or ingest. Plus, fungi could then spread to other trees or the soil around the stump.

Disease

Unfortunately, many trees in Mobile are susceptible to disease. When unhealthy or dead trees are taken down, the stump can continue to harbor that disease. The disease could potentially spread to other trees if the stump is not removed.

Safety Hazard

When you’re getting exercise in your yard or mowing your grass, it can be an inconvenience to have stumps in your way. In a worst-case scenario, that tree stump could cause a major injury to you, a family member, or a visitor. Of course, we don’t want anyone to get hurt by tripping over a stump, and a secondary concern would be some sort of liability issue.

Aesthetics

Most people would agree that tree stumps left behind in yards are not pretty to look at. If you plan on selling your home, an old stump that stands awkwardly in your yard may lower your property value. Further, little saplings can sometimes grow out of stumps. While it’s certainly amazing that a stump can yield a baby tree, that sapling might not grow into a beautiful, strong tree. Instead, what you may end up with is something that looks out of place, and you’ll have to keep trimming away at it unless you completely remove the stump.

There are several consequences to not removing stumps from your property. Not only do stumps detract from your yard’s overall appearance, but they can also attract pests and fungi in addition to posing a major safety hazard.
